Markets and the community
Markets and education
There are numerous opportunities for schools to become involved with the vitality, culture and heritage that Calderdale's markets have to offer.
Create a school project
Running a project will enable your students to gain an understanding of the strategic importance of markets both locally and regionally, and to understand the important part their market plays in their community.
Your project could include:
- a visit to one or more of the markets
- the opportunity for students to run their own stall (for free)
- a talk about Borough Market.
Choose from Halifax Borough Market, the largest traditional indoor market in the borough, which attracts thousands of visitors each week or one of the many local community markets:
Why not combine a visit to a market with one of the many tourist attractions nearby?
Or why not bring your class to one of the second hand, antique or bric-a-brac markets, to view everyday items that their parents, grandparents and even great grandparents once used, some of which are now collectables.
Free stalls to schools
Let your students have a real taste of life in a busy competitive market environment by running their "own" stall at one of the open markets mentioned above.
Use of the stall is free for educational purposes including:
- Promotion of adult learning
- Literacy classes
- Parent teacher fundraising events
and so on.
We can also arrange a talk at your school about the renovated grade II listed Borough market, which we are justifiably proud of. The talk tells of the significance of the site, its history, management of the building and the process of building refurbishment.
Whatever you choose for your students you can be sure they will have a learning experience to remember!
