Motor salvage operators licence
Introduction
The Motor Salvage Operators Regulations 2002 became law on 21st October 2002.
The definition of a motor salvage operator is described as someone who carries on a business, which is:
- Wholly or partly involved in the recovery for re-use or sale of salvageable parts from motor vehicles and the subsequent sale or other disposal for scrap of the remainder of the vehicles concerned.
- Wholly or mainly involved in the purchase of written-off vehicles and their subsequent repair and re-sale.
- Wholly or mainly involved in the sale or purchase of motor vehicles, which are to be subject (whether immediately or on a subsequent re-sale) of any of the activities mentioned in paragraphs 1 and 2 above.
- Wholly or mainly involved in activities falling within paragraphs 2 and 3 above.
Calderdale MBC are able to offer registration facilities.
The regulations require all motor salvage operators to:
- be registered (renewable every 3 years)
- maintain appropriate records of purchase and disposal
- require identification checks for vendors and purchasers
- allow the Police right of entry to premises and the right of search without a warrant.
