Food business registration

Introduction

Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 6(2) requires new food businesses to register with the local authority 28 days prior to starting business. For further information see Legislation on Food Hygiene|External link

It is also a legal requirement to notify the authority of any significant change or closure of an establishment. This ensures the authority always has up-to-date information on establishments.

Some businesses need to meet higher standards if they produce meat, meat products, dairy products or fish products from the raw state (see Approved premises for food).

Should you have any questions over registration of a food business contact the Commercial Team of Environmental Health on 01422 392373.
