Post-16 transport policy

Your questions answered

Do all Post 16 Students Qualify?

No. If you can access provision throughout West Yorkshire by using a School Plus Metrocard (which is already heavily subsidised) then no further financial assistance would be given.

What happens if the course I want to do is out of Authority?

Then you have to meet the criteria as outlined within the Provision for 2011/12. It is means tested and you have to be able to demonstrate financial hardship.

They also have to be travelling to a provision that is over and above 3 miles from your home address.

You will also only qualify if an equivalent or similar course cannot be found within Calderdale.

If a student at Post 16 has a Special Educational need – do they automatically qualify?

Not necessarily.

Learners who have a Special Educational Need will be treated no less favourably than other learners. Mobility allowances will be taken into account.

They still have to meet the criteria as outlined within the provision and must be able to demonstrate financial hardship. If their household income is above that of £30,810 then they may only be offered reduced assistance with transport costs, which is either a contribution of up to 50% towards the cost of transport or reimbursement of 50% of the transport costs if transport is arranged by a parent / guardian.

Can I appeal against my decision, should I not be pleased with the outcome?

You can write to the Principal Officer c/o Access Capital Team, Northgate House, Halifax, HX1 1UN stating your reasons for wanting to appeal against the decision made.

If you are still unhappy with their decision you can then take this further to a Post 16 Transport Appeal which is heard at either the Town Hall / Northgate House.
