Bullying

Introduction

Young boy looking upset

In Calderdale we are agreed that bullying in any form is unacceptable and that all children and young people have the right to feel safe both in and out of school.

This site offers a range of information, contacts and useful links to help children and young people and the adults who live or work with them.

If you or someone you know is being bullied you need to tell someone.

National Anti-bullying week

This year's anti-bullying week was held on 14-18 November and theme was 'Stop and think - words can hurt'.  For more information see - Anti-Bullying Alliance|External link

Schools and other organisations were encouraged to celebrate last year's anti-bullying week by focusing on the theme of ‘taking action together’.

The campaign focussed on how everyone has a part to play in tackling bullying - from the adult ‘who turns a blind eye’ to a child who watches bullying take place but doesn’t tell anyone or appears to join in the bullying.

The bystander has an important part to play and can make the difference between bullying that continues, and bullying that is challenged and stopped. It can be hard to know what to do, who to tell and to know what strategies work. However by taking action together, and encouraging everyone to decide that they will not just sit back and allow bullying to continue unchallenged, we will send a clear message to those who bully that their actions are wrong, damaging and will not be tolerated.

As part of anti-bullying week, an event took place for secondary schools at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax, and enabled students taking part to learn from each other and understand the power they all have to send a positive message to others that they will not join in bullying because of peer pressure and that they understand the impact on those who are bullied.  Free online resources are available to support anti-bullying activities in schools, colleges and youth work. There is also an anti-bullying shop with a range of products to promote anti-bullying week.
