Upbeat exercise referral scheme

About the Upbeat scheme

What will I do during the 10 weeks?

You will be invited to attend a weekly exercise session for a period of 10 weeks. The first session will include a welcome and introduction to the Upbeat Scheme.

Each exercise session will begin with a gentle warm up to loosen joints and muscles. This is then followed by circuit based or aerobic activities designed to improve your circulation, balance and strength. Each person is encouraged to work at their own pace and level throughout every exercise session. The session finishes with stretching and relaxation.

During the 10 weeks you will have the opportunity to attend group walks, exercise to music sessions, swimming, Options 50 and the Lifestyles health and fitness gyms within Calderdale Council leisure centres.

What can I gain from taking part in regular activity?

You will be given a ‘What Next’ pack full of information about further exercise opportunities in the Calderdale area, including the Upbeat ‘Graduate’ programme.

Being an Upbeat membership card holder you will have the opportunity to take advantage of a wide range of activities within Calderdale Council Leisure centres and swimming pools at a discounted rate until your card expires. Once your card expires you will be issued with a Passport to Leisure card.

What will it cost to take part in the Upbeat Scheme?

The initial 10 weeks is free of charge. Further community exercise sessions are available at a discounted rate, when using your Upbeat membership card. After this, the sessions will be charged at the normal rate for that particular venue or session.

For details of the exercise sessions, see Physical activity.

How much exercise should I aim to do?

It is recommended that you should start with one period of moderate activity for up to half an hour a week. You should then gradually build this up to half an hour every day. This can be broken down into bouts of 10 or 15 minutes. Moderate activity includes any physical movement which makes you feel warmer and breathe a little faster and deeper.
