Be prepared for severe gales

As severe gales approach, the Met Office will issue a UK: Severe weather warning|External link.

Be prepared

Before winter arrives, clear gutters of leaves and debris to prevent overflowing and flooding. Make sure you have access to candles or a wind up torch.

If a severe weather warning for high wind has been issued:

During and after severe gales

Stay indoors where possible until gales pass.

Do not drive unless your journey is necessary. If driving take care on exposed routes such as bridges or high level roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible. Slow down and be aware of side winds, particular care should be taken if you are towing or you are in a high sided vehicle.
