Advice and support

Rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse

There is a myth that most perpetrators of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse are strangers to the victim or survivor. In fact, these crimes are often perpetrated by intimate partners and family members as forms of domestic violence. Victims of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse have practical needs as well as the need for emotional support, including health needs arising from the risk of sexually transmitted infections and the risk of pregnancy, and a need to report the crime to the police. The closest Sexual Assault Referral Centre is at St. Mary's Hospital in Manchester.

The centre provides forensic medical examinations, emotional and practical support, individual counselling, screening for sexually transmitted infections, HIV counselling, post coital contraception and pregnancy testing, and support throughout criminal proceedings.

There are 6 examination suites with similar facilities in West Yorkshire.
