Advice and support

Housing and accommodation

At the Housing Options Service we can offer help and advice to anyone who wants or needs to find somewhere to live. We can also give general advice about domestic violence, benefits, mortgage arrears, tenancy problems, housing options available and the rights that landlords and tenants have.

For a personal interview with an Adviser contact the Housing Options Service.

Calderdale Sanctuary Scheme

Sanctuary is a free, confidential service for people at risk from domestic violence. The Sanctuary Scheme is designed to enable you to remain in your own home if you want to do so. Different security measures can be put in to your property whether you live in your own home, or are a tenant of a housing association or a private landlord (as long as we have permission from the landlord).

Help and legal advice can also be given if the abuser is a joint tenant or joint owner of the home. For more information, a Sanctuary leaflet, or to make a referral, contact the Housing Options Service.

Refuges and Emergency Accommodation

A refuge is a safe house which provides temporary accommodation to women (and children) fleeing domestic violence. There are two refuges in Calderdale. If both refuges are full, workers at the Housing Options Service, Calderdale Women's Refuge, AASRA, or Calderdale Women's Centre will help you find space in a suitable refuge outside the borough.

Workers at the National Domestic Violence Helpline have access to a database with detailed information about refuges across the UK. The database is updated daily by individual services, indicating whether or not they currently have space for women and children. Helpline workers can also identify which refuges have specialist services for women with particular needs. The public can access a less detailed version of this database at: Find a Local Domestic Violence Service|External link.
